A $750,000 investment pool is available, with individual investments ranging from $50,000 to $200,000, funded by the DeVos family and LEAD Venture Corporation. TGL is Redefining Golf with Technology, Intimacy, and Energy 

 on January 7, 2025, marked a significant moment in the evolution of golf, blending technology with traditional sport in a way that has not been seen before on the biggest stage. Co-founded by golf legends Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and former NBC Sports executive Mike McCarley, TGL aims to redefine how competitive golf is experienced by fans and players alike.

A CEO’s Front-Row View of TGL’s Groundbreaking Debut 

, a venture corporation that thrives on investing in transformative ideas, attending the inaugural TGL match at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, FL was nothing short of exhilarating. The evening marked the culmination of years of planning, innovation, and bold decision-making. Sitting in the intimate setting of the SoFi Center, I could feel the electricity in the air—a perfect blend of technology and tradition that reimagined how golf can be experienced. 

The venue itself deserves special mention. Its intimate design brought fans closer to the action than ever before. You could see every detail of each shot's outcome, either on the state-of-the-art screen or the green itself. This real-time visibility wasn’t just a perk—it was a game-changer. In traditional outdoor golf, the suspense often lies in waiting for the camera to pan and reveal the ball’s destination. Here, the suspense was replaced with immediacy and engagement, drawing audible reactions from the players and the crowd alike. 

The format was another standout feature. Match play with unique elements allowed players to showcase their talent and personality in a way that felt fresh and entertaining. You could sense that the players were liberated to experiment and have fun, and the enjoyment they displayed was shared by fans in the stadium. 

As the night progressed and the Hammers were thrown, it was easy to settle into the completely different experience. After all, the golf was the same – completing the hole in as few shots as possible. When combined with live microphones capturing the players’ strategic banter—“More left to right. Hit the spinner over there”—it created a level of intimacy rarely experienced in professional sports. 

Another defining aspect of the evening was the production quality. There’s something about seeing your sport on ESPN. With the platform’s legacy and reach, it brought a sense of legitimacy and gravity to the event, and the 

There’s always room for improvement, of course. For example, I’d love to see a camera angle positioned in front of the hole to better capture the drama of the putts sinking. Yet, even with minor tweaks ahead, the core of TGL—a fusion of cutting-edge technology, compelling gameplay, and a modern take on fan engagement—is poised to attract attention. 

As I left the SoFi Center, I couldn’t help but feel that I’d witnessed something truly special. TGL isn’t just about golf; it’s about the future of how sports could better connect with fans.  

A Former Professional Golfer’s Perspective on Modernizing Golf 

Generation Z has a fundamentally different attitude and relationship with traditional sports compared to Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers, and this presents a big challenge for sports organizations. A 

 published in 2021 from the Emory Marketing Analytics Center found that an astonishing 27 percent of Generation Z considers themselves “anti-sports,” compared to 7 percent of Millennials, 5 percent of Gen X, and 6 percent of Baby Boomers. A subsequent 

 considers everything outside of football, basketball, and baseball a niche product. However, a 2023 Deloitte 

 suggests that Gen Z fans are still developing their sports fandom.  

To appeal to a changing audience, TGL harnesses technology and builds a modern approach to how golf is presented to today’s sports fans. The incorporation of digital technology and mics provided the traditional sport aspects of esports, which are particularly 

. While much of the media coverage to date has focused on the simulation and the technological aspects of TGL, I was intrigued by how it will address some of the more fundamental challenges that have prevented golf from appealing to a greater audience, which are the slow pace of live broadcasts and the multi-day format of traditional tournaments.  

The two-hour format of TGL is significantly shorter than a typical golf tournament broadcast, and the mixed formats introduce considerably more action. Each hole is interesting and engaging in ways that are not available in a Thursday broadcast. The match last night between The Bay Golf Club and New York Golf Club was not as competitive as many would have liked, but I can see a future match offering fans excitement comparable to a final stretch of a traditional tournament with a packed leaderboard.  

The team format, along with alternate shots, head-to-head Singles, and the Hammer feature, offers a sense of fun that was previously absent from watching competitive golf. As I watched the broadcast last night with a friend who does not keep up with golf, we both agreed that it was more digestible and entertaining than a traditional golf broadcast. I appreciated that with TGL, every shot, good or bad, is broadcasted, whereas traditional golf broadcasts feel more or less like a curated highlight reel - the top players in the world are still humans, after all.  

Reflecting on my own journey with golf - playing and thinking about the sport every day between the ages of eight and 23 - I must admit that the idea of spending a day off on the course doesn’t particularly excite me now. However, after watching TGL, I can envision myself occasionally spending half a day over the weekend on the golf course if my friends are willing to come up with similar formats.  

TGL presents an interesting solution for how golf can be enjoyed by a wider, changing audience. By addressing the challenges posed by traditional tournament formats and embracing technology-driven strategies, TGL has the potential to attract more fans across different generations. The remainder of the season could provide valuable insights for the broader sports industry by highlighting which strategies resonated with audiences and which were ineffective.   

The 2025 opening TGL match demonstrated that golf is not bound by its traditional format. From Christoph’s enthusiastic in-person experience to Kaiwen’s analytical perspective from watching via television, it’s clear that TGL is on a mission to reimagine the sport for a new generation of fans. By addressing core challenges—such as pacing and format—while leveraging technology to create a more immersive experience, TGL has positioned itself as a beacon of innovation in sports. 

For fans of all ages, the message is clear: golf can be thrilling, accessible, and fun. As the season unfolds, TGL’s success will not only redefine golf but also provide a playbook for other sports looking to adapt to the ever-evolving preferences of modern audiences. Q: What marketing strategies do you plan to implement to attract high-quality startups, shareholders, and innovation clients to LEAD?

Well, it's a mix of old-school hustle and new-age tech. We're building relationships, one handshake at a time. But we're also leveraging digital platforms to reach a global audience. Think of it like a full-court press but in the world of venture capital. We're using social media, content marketing, and strategic partnerships to get the word out. And let's not forget the power of a good old-fashioned pitch deck. We're always looking for that next idea, the next unicorn, the next big thing. My job is to bring attention to the excellent work everyone at LEAD is already doing, and if I can make their jobs a little bit easier in the meantime, then I’m on the right track. I’ve got a lot of ideas that I want to implement–all in due time, I know we can achieve great things. There are so many wonderful stories from the fantastic ecosystem that LEAD has assembled; the world needs to hear them all.

Q: What advice do you have for founders looking to boost their marketing efforts? 

Focus on telling a great story. People connect with people, their stories of perseverance, what makes them tick, and how their passion drives them to achieve greatness. 

And don't be afraid to experiment. Try new things, fail fast, and learn from your mistakes. Remember, marketing is about building relationships, not just promoting a product. So, be authentic, be genuine, and be yourself. We’re doing that through thought-provoking podcasts, organic videos, and engaging content that will prove the value of storytelling.

Q:  Can you take us through what a day in your life looks like at LEAD?

 It's a whirlwind, man. I've got a one-year-old and a five-year-old, so the days start early. After I drop them off at grandma’s and school, respectively, it's into the office, diving into emails and checking our social media accounts. I spend a lot of time working on and with our portfolio companies, venture partners, and startups to communicate their news and marketing initatives accordingly. But I also make time for creative pursuits, like writing, creating graphics, editing videos, and podcasting. It's a constant balancing act, but it's all worth it when you see the impact we're making.

Q: What excites you about being a part of a company improving lives in sports and health? 

A: It's a game-changer. We're at the forefront of a revolution that's going to change the way we play, train, and live. The potential for innovation is limitless. It's exciting to be part of a company making a real difference in people's lives. We're not just investing in companies; but in the future of sports and health technology. These are things people want and need, which in itself is inspiring. 

Q: What is the most impactful thing you do to maintain your health and well-being?

 My father always says consistency is the key to greatness. So, I try to get enough sleep, eat healthy-ish, and exercise regularly. But I also make time for fun and relaxation. I love playing softball, watching my favorite teams, and spending time with family–who make every day worth living. It's also important to take breaks and recharge so you can come back stronger and more focused. I’ve found what works for me, and I’m grateful for that. I hope everyone can do the same.

Q: What recent sports and health tech trends have you been paying attention to most?

 On the health side, I have been paying attention to proactive wellness in various categories as people around the world are increasingly focused on improving their health in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Increasingly, people are beginning to realize that even the absence of symptoms and diseases does not necessarily indicate great health, and consumers are increasingly focused on every aspect of what makes them whole and complete, which includes physical, mental, and social well-being, all of which contribute to a productive and satisfying life. Additionally, spiritual well-being is becoming increasingly important to people at a time when there’s also a growing volume of medical literature illustrating the healing effects of spirituality on morbidity and mortality. As a result of consumers shifting their focus away from sick care, more people have become increasingly educated and discerning about food ingredients, water quality, the materials they wear, the environment (blue light at night & 

), and the quality of relationships with themselves and others. 

On the sports side, I’ve been interested in how athletic activities can lessen the effects of social isolation and help people reconnect to local communities. Most sports are inherently social and can be a powerful tool in bringing people together.  

Q: What are the biggest opportunities and challenges you foresee in sports and health tech in the next 5-10 years?

The biggest challenge for sports and leagues is connecting with the Gen Z population, as Gen Zers have a fundamentally different attitude and relationship to traditional sports compared to Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers. On the health side, the challenge is the increasing burden of chronic diseases on individuals, communities, and society at large. About half of Americans are dealing with at least one chronic disease, and 90% of the $4.5T annual healthcare expenditure in the U.S. are for people with chronic and mental health conditions. Although the U.S. is a leader in medical innovation and spends nearly twice as much as the average OECD country on healthcare, life expectancy in the U.S. is lower than the OECD average. Currently, the U.S. “health care” system is focused on treating downstream physical symptoms, and even when patients have a diagnosis, high costs prevent many from receiving critical treatments. More frustrating is the fact that not many people have access to the upstream factors which sustain health, such as clean air, water, and quality food. Much more needs to be done to address the underlying causes of chronic conditions and diseases or else the abysmal state of American health will continue. 

Q: Can you take us through what a day in your life looks like at LEAD?

 I review numerous pitch decks, talk to startup founders, conduct due diligence on potential investments, consult with industry experts, and do as much reading and research as I can to learn about how the status quo came to be, and formulate my thesis on future opportunities. 

Q: What excites you about being a part of a company that’s improving lives in sports and health?

Both topics are close to my heart. Golf was a big part of my life before joining LEAD; the sport taught me many values that I continue to carry with me today and has shaped who I am as a person. It’s a privilege now to be able to invest in startups that can help introduce sports and movement to more people. On the health side, I’ve had personal health challenges even though I was always diligent about what I ate and made sure to stay physically fit. The process of healing my body made me realize just how many aspects of modern life are not conducive to good health, and I was shocked to learn the lengths that some people must go to live a symptom-free life. Investing in and working with founders and companies that address some of the underlying problems gets me out of bed every morning.

That’s a very tough question because sometimes, neglecting one aspect of my life throws me off balance completely. If I had to pick one, it would be surrounding myself with people I trust, respect, and admire. With their support, I have been able to overcome health issues and make tough but ultimately beneficial decisions that help me grow as a person.

"Imagine a world where your FSA provider automatically recommends the optimal contribution amount, scans your expenses for eligible items, and reimburses you before you even pay your credit card bill," he says.

Silver is working towards this vision by developing innovative solutions leveraging technology to streamline the entire FSA process. By automating tasks such as expense identification and claim submission, Silver aims to make FSAs more accessible and user-friendly.

Oded's entrepreneurial journey has been filled with valuable lessons, many of which have shaped Silver's approach to building its platform. One key takeaway is the importance of listening to users. "Don't invest too much time or resources in hypothesizing without validating your ideas with real people," he advises.

Another important lesson is the value of building a strong ecosystem network. "Partner with other companies that can add value to your business," Oded says. "This could include design partners, distributors, adjacent products, or service providers."

Finally, Oded emphasizes the importance of focusing on sustainable value. "Prioritize tasks that can create lasting impact," he advises. "For example, invest in SEO over SEM whenever possible."

However, deliberate hot/cold exposure, compression therapy, and percussion guns have percolated into gyms and households. Increasingly, fitness facilities have become a more accessible solution to preventive health compared to the United States healthcare system.

The trend is due to many factors, but this short blog will focus on three: the increasing assault on our health, dissatisfaction with healthcare systems, and consumers deciding to take charge of their well-being by focusing on preventive health. 

According to the U.S. National Health Survey data from July 1957 - June 1959, there were about 

 of diabetes per 1,000, a rate of 0.9%. In less than 65 years, 

 of the U.S. population had diabetes in 2021. As of 2023, more than 

 American adults have prediabetes, making nearly 

 the U.S. population either diabetic or prediabetic. Cancer rates are 

 among adults at younger ages, and new cancer diagnoses in the U.S. are expected to top 

 for the first time in 2024. Since 1973, total sperm count in Western countries has 

, corresponding to a 1.6% decline per year. Nearly 

 of young Americans between the ages of 3-17 have a mental, emotional, developmental, or behavioral disorder. The statistics can continue - our bodies are not functioning well in today’s environment. 

At the same time, healthcare spending in the U.S. reached 

 of working-age Americans, or 72 million people, have medical bill problems or are paying off medical debt, and that’s not including an additional 7 million elderly adults facing the same issues. For cancer patients in the United States, the average cost of medical care and drugs is more than 

 in the year following a cancer diagnosis. Two years after a cancer diagnosis, 

 of Americans have depleted their entire life’s assets. It is no wonder then, that 

 of U.S. adults report that the healthcare system is failing them. 

If we asked children how they are doing in school, would we be satisfied if the answer was “Great, I didn’t fail the tests?” Yet, healthcare systems today primarily 

 on disease, specialty care, and technology rather than preventive care; health is framed almost exclusively in the 

, and achieving “health” means that one hasn’t been diagnosed with a disease or a major risk factor for disease. Patients are 

 based on the level of the problem. In an acuity table consisting of four levels - stable, moderate risk, complex patient, and high-risk patient, the best one can do is stable.

Yet, we want to be more than just stable, and the disconnect between health and the healthcare system is not limited to the United States. The World Health Organization defines 

 as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” The definition aligns with how most people think about health. In a 

 of 19,000 respondents across 19 countries said their mental health is as important as their physical health, and a majority viewed their spiritual and social health as “extremely” or “very important.” Yet, less than 

 of physicians and nurses worldwide were trained in managing mental health problems in 2020. Moreover, a large and growing body of evidence suggests that at least 

 of our health are outside conventional healthcare systems.

Often, the pursuit of optimizing one’s health gets the “biohacking” label, one that’s typically reserved for affluent people or elite athletes. However, why is spending on a pill or surgery a more legitimate health intervention than walking in nature, engaging in social interactions, eliminating ultra-processed foods, and limiting exposure to pesticides/herbicides? The distinction between “clinical” and “lifestyle” health interventions is mostly 

 - if something works, it works; if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. 

Dr. Casey Means, a Stanford-trained physician and co-founder of 

, commented on the root cause of the chronic disease 

 with Athletech News: “Most of the chronic diseases and chronic symptoms facing the U.S. - essentially, all the top killers of Americans today - are rooted in the same thing, which is metabolic dysfunction.” However, the paradigm of Western healthcare has led us to largely 

 metabolic health, and instead focus on treating all the downstream symptoms that result from metabolic dysfunction. 

When reflecting on the trend of GLP-1 drugs, Dr. Means expresses concerns, not because of a lack of efficacy, but because it doesn’t address the causes of the problems, which are unhealthy lifestyles and toxic living environments. Dr. Means explains:

It’s a very dark trend that is essentially trying to gaslight Americans to believe that health is found in a weekly injection for life and not from changing the environment that is so obviously crushing our ability to be healthy. If you had a sick fish in a fish tank filled with dirty polluted water, you obviously would not inject that fish every week for the rest of its life. You would change out the water.

 that we drink continue to burden our bodies rather than nourish them. The adoption of various “recovery” protocols in households and gyms is a reflection of our desire to be more than just symptom-free - we want to be well physically, mentally, and socially. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, people around the world are 

 focused on improving their health and well-being. In 2022, around 

 of U.S. consumers report wellness as a top priority in their daily lives, a significant increase from 42 percent in 2020. As science-backed protocols and technologies such as at-home diagnostics become more accessible, consumers are increasingly looking outside the healthcare system to improve metabolic functions and achieve health - a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Q: How does the innovation arm of LEAD operate, and who can benefit most from getting involved?

If you’re just getting started, wanting to build a team or not, or aren’t satisfied with the status quo of your own innovation initiatives, we can most probably help. We can be your extended investment team resource through a retainer model, or we put together a tailored, limited project depending on your needs. Whatever it is, we usually pull in resources from across our corporation, especially the investment unit, to deliver on insights, but we also call on our entire network of mentors, entrepreneurs and investors to pull in additional expertise if necessary.


Just like my colleagues have said it before – there is no typical day at LEAD, and yes, that is the actual beauty of it. Having been with LEAD for a whooping 7.5 years now, my work days have significantly changed though when becoming a mother. I used to travel a lot, attended events all over the world and spent a lot of energy on building relationships. Now fierce time management, laser focus, saying “no” when necessary and maximum flexibility are key to my days.

I dedicate many of my afternoons to my toddler yet at the same time have to make time for mostly U.S. based conversations, so 10PM calls are no rare occasion. What has become rare though is taking time for lunch meetings; but I keep trying to make room to meet people as much as I can, as I know not only do potential business opportunities come from that, but also does my personal motivation and wellbeing depend on nurturing relationships and drawing inspiration from what all these fantastic people around me are working on and thinking about.

 The most exciting aspect of being a part of LEAD is the direct impact we can and do have on people's lives. Whether it's helping an athlete optimize their performance through cutting-edge tech or improving public health through innovations in wearable technology, it’s incredibly rewarding to see how our work positively affects individuals and communities. Sports and health are integral to well-being and happiness, and knowing that we're driving innovations that make people healthier, stronger, and more connected to their goals is a powerful motivator. Additionally, the pace of technological advancement in these fields is exhilarating and I've always loved the fact that there is never a moment of stand-still at LEAD.

From how I’ve described my day to day, it's probably become clear that maintaining a health and well-being routine is a must-do focus for me. I am striving to be the best version of myself, not only for myself, but more importantly for my family; I do not want to take stress out on a 2-year old that will not be able to put it into context.

So what do I do? Each week I schedule time for workouts (big fan of yoga, pilates, barre and HIIT), and I also try to implement as much movement as possible into my days, e.g. by cycling anywhere and everywhere, climbing playgrounds and happily living on a fifth floor with no elevator. Nutrition is key, and while there is always room for improvement, I'm mostly happy with my daily choices. I also put more and more focus on my sleep hygiene knowing that this is probably the most important puzzle piece here.

While this constitutes my health and well-being “strategy”, it would be a house of cards if I didn’t allocate time to spend with family and friends. Sometimes there’s only enough time for a voice message exchange, sometimes it’s an entire weekend spent together – the crucial bit for me is to take time to connect and check on the people I care about. It is such a cliché, but it’s true – healthy and strong relationships are what keep us grounded, balanced, as well as safe and happy in this crazy fast-paced world of today.

LEADing the Way: Nathalie Sonne, Chief Innovation Officer

“When people dare me, I want to show them how it’s done!” 

This is motivation in its purest form, a driving factor for Shavini Fernando, a VR and game developer-turned-founder of 

. Her backstory is as inspirational as what she’s managed to build in such a short time – which still keeps growing. Earlier this month, Shavini sat down with our Chief Innovation Officer Nathalie Sonne to discuss her path to founding OxiWear, here’s what we learned.

OxiWear aims to reduce patient vulnerability to 

through continuous oxygen monitoring and low-oxygen alerting. The Virginia-based company simplifies this process using a sleek and discreet ear-wearable, positioning itself in the ever-evolving world of wearable technology.

But Fernando’s story dates further back. She reflects on it candidly, saying, “I was an athlete! I was a sprinter and a swimmer — I didn’t know I had a hole in my heart. I never got diagnosed. By overtraining, I busted my lungs and heart.” She was diagnosed with Eisenmenger Syndrome in 2015. “My lungs have readjusted to support my lifestyle, so I have severe pulmonary hypertension along with it.”

As a patient with severe pulmonary hypertension, she is prone to hypoxia, which has led to several cardiac arrests and hypoxic strokes. “What happens is, suddenly, my oxygen drops really low, or my blood flow starts reversing, which can cause oxygen to drop,” she describes in more detail. 

Upon earning her Master’s Degree in Technology and Culture at Georgetown University, she suffered from an episode of cardiac arrest. “The doctor said I can’t live alone and can’t study at Georgetown because it was too hilly for me.” Some may see this as prudent advice, but Fernando saw it as a dare. 

“To prove to my doctors that I can live alone and I can still do my normal, crazy, and adrenaline stuff, I developed OxiWear, so I can know when my oxygen levels are dropping low,” she starts before taking the routine next step, “then everyone wanted me to commercialize it!”   

The inspirational founder and her FDA-approved hardware are prepared to aid humanity.
