Learn how the Orlando Magic Venture Challenge helps sports tech startups grow with insights from Andrew Bekemeyer on innovation, fan engagement, and technology.
In the world of sports, innovation goes beyond just the game itself. It’s about leveraging emerging technologies to solve challenges, improve business operations, foster deeper fan engagement, and shape the future of sports experiences across the industry—just a few of the many verticals that extend innovation beyond the game. As the sports industry evolves, the Orlando Magic have created an opportunity for startups to make an impact in sports tech through the Orlando Magic Venture Challenge, Powered by LEAD. The challenge provides startups with a platform to collaborate with experts in both the sports and health tech industries, creating valuable exposure and potential growth opportunities.
Andrew Bekemeyer, the Orlando Magic’s Assistant Director of Innovation, explains that the challenge offers startups the opportunity to connect not only with the Magic’s team and ownership group but also with a broader community of investors and business leaders driving the future of sports innovation. "The Orlando Magic are committed to fostering innovation, and the Venture Challenge is a direct reflection of that commitment. It’s an opportunity for startups to showcase their solutions to a dynamic, influential group of professionals in both sports and technology," Bekemeyer says.
The Orlando Magic Venture Challenge stands out because it connects startups with a wide range of stakeholders across the sports and innovation sectors. “What makes this opportunity so unique is the depth of expertise you gain access to,” Bekemeyer explains. “The challenge provides an opportunity to interact with not only key stakeholders within our organization but also industry experts in the startup world (LEAD) and members of our team ownership group (RDV Corp). To my knowledge, I’m unaware of a forum like this from any other peer within our league or even within professional sports in general.”
Startups participating in this challenge won’t just pitch their ideas—they’ll be engaging with influential leaders across various fields. “It's about collaboration and feedback. It’s not just a competition. We’re creating a dialogue between startups and some of the brightest minds in sports and tech, which could help them refine their solutions and open doors for future partnerships and investments,” Bekemeyer says. This type of exposure is a rare and valuable opportunity for any startup looking to break into the sports world.
When it comes to connecting authentically with a global fanbase, professional sports organizations have the daunting task of always staying one step ahead. “We are consistently seeking new and innovative ways to authentically connect with our fanbase,” Bekemeyer explains. “The challenges we face in fan engagement require us to be creative and think beyond traditional marketing tactics. New technologies constantly emerge, and we must ensure that they serve our larger goal of fostering genuine, meaningful connections with fans worldwide.”
For startups aiming to work with teams like the Magic, it’s essential to understand how technology can help solve these problems. Bekemeyer emphasizes that innovation must be purposeful. “It can be tempting to chase after the latest trend, but we must ensure that our resources are allocated towards meaningful growth and connection. There’s no room for gimmicks. Startups should focus on solutions that drive long-term value,” he advises.
Fan engagement is an area where professional sports are seeing significant strides in technology. For the Orlando Magic, creating a frictionless fan experience is a key priority. “We’re exploring advancements in technology to create a seamless experience for all fans visiting our arena,” Bekemeyer says. “This includes everything from optimizing ticketing and venue access to improving the in-game experience. But technology isn't just about convenience. It’s about enhancing the emotional connection fans feel to the team and the sport.”
Bekemeyer also notes that fan engagement doesn’t end once fans step into the stadium. “We consistently look for methods to enhance the viewer experience throughout the game. Whether through immersive content, augmented reality features, or new interactive elements, we’re constantly looking for ways to make the game-day experience more engaging for fans both inside the arena and at home.”
Content is king. And one of the Magic’s strategies for reaching fans beyond Orlando is through digital content. “The league is focused on growing the game of basketball beyond our respective communities,” Bekemeyer says. “Our digital initiatives are designed to expand the game’s reach and grow the Magic’s fanbase. We’ve embraced live-streaming opportunities, behind-the-scenes content, and other forms of digital engagement to keep fans connected.”
Bekemeyer adds, “This digital push isn’t just about reaching a larger audience, it’s about building a global community of basketball enthusiasts. Whether they’re in Orlando, Shanghai, or anywhere in between, digital content allows fans to engage with the team in real-time, creating a sense of belonging no matter where they are.”
The Magic have long incorporated data analytics, AI, and automation into their operations. “We’ve consistently utilized data analytics, automation, and AI to ensure we are delivering a legendary product,” Bekemeyer shares. “These technologies are embedded across various areas of the organization, from business strategy to marketing, global partnerships, and ticket sales. By integrating data-driven solutions into our daily operations, we ensure that we’re not just keeping pace with innovation, but leading the way.”
To simplify, data analytics helps the team understand fan behaviors and preferences, which allows them to personalize content and promotions. AI (artificial intelligence) allows the organization to predict trends and optimize ticket pricing, creating a more seamless experience. Automation helps streamline routine tasks, so staff can focus on high-priority areas like customer service and new initiatives.
Bekemeyer continues, “One of the greatest advantages of using these technologies is their ability to optimize fan engagement. For example, by analyzing fan behavior, we can offer personalized promotions or content that speaks to their unique interests. It’s all about creating a more customized and rewarding experience for fans.”
From streamlining ticket sales to improving client retention, AI and automation help the Magic run their operations more efficiently. “AI tools predict demand, adjust pricing, and recommend personalized offers to fans. The result is a smoother, more efficient experience for everyone involved,” Bekemeyer explains. “We also leverage AI to enhance our marketing efforts. For instance, it helps us target the right audience with tailored messages, maximizing our reach while minimizing wasted effort.”
Behind the scenes, these technologies are also making the Magic’s operations more agile. “With automation, we’re able to handle more data with fewer resources. Our ability to use AI to anticipate trends, adjust pricing, and predict demand means that we can make more informed decisions quickly,” Bekemeyer says. “This agility allows us to stay competitive in a data-driven world where things move fast.”
For startups eager to collaborate with teams like the Orlando Magic, Bekemeyer offers this advice: “When we have conversations with startups that are pitching a product, our focal point is learning how their respective solution is different from anything else in the marketplace.”
Startups should be prepared to explain how their product addresses a specific challenge and how it aligns with the organization’s goals and priorities. “We want to know not only how their solution works but also why it’s valuable for us. What’s the story behind the product, and how does it help us fulfill our mission of improving the fan experience, driving operational efficiency, or increasing engagement?”
“Startups should clearly understand the business challenges we face, and their solution should fit into our broader strategy. We’re not just looking for a shiny new tech tool; we want something that will make a lasting impact,” Bekemeyer advises.
As the sports industry continues to evolve, certain technological trends are poised to shape its future. “Enhancing the fan experience both physically and digitally remains a top priority within the sports landscape,” Bekemeyer says. “Gamification, over-the-top content, broadcasting & streaming, and frictionless in-venue experiences are all emerging as key drivers of change.”
Bekemeyer notes, “Gamification is especially exciting because it allows fans to engage with live games in real-time, adding an interactive dimension to the experience. Fans can earn rewards, participate in challenges, and compete with others, making them feel more connected to the game.”
At the same time, innovations in broadcasting and streaming are expanding how fans consume content. “With streaming, fans can watch games on their terms—on-demand, from any device, and with enhanced features like interactive stats and player feeds. It’s an experience that allows fans to tailor their viewing experience in ways that were previously unimaginable,” Bekemeyer says.
